Environmental Permitting Timely development of a major capital uranium project depends on effective coordination of environmental and regulatory activities with exploration and evaluation work. In many regulatory jurisdictions environmental assessment and licensing requirements may result in 18 to 24 months of data collection, evaluation and planning. This work must start at the earliest possible time when it looks as though a prospect may have genuine economic potential. Foremost in the process is to establish a constructive dialog with regulators, at a project’s inception. In order to develop a realistic schedule it is critical to understand the regulatory framework, timeline, level of monitoring and oversight that may be required. Components of the environmental assessment often involve estimating impacts of mining activities on radiological health of surrounding communities, water, air and land resources, historical and archeological studies and detailed hydrogeologic characterization of the orebody. An understanding of the regulatory objectives allows the creation of a plan for data gathering and evaluation. The plan can be integrated into the overall mine development plan and implemented to ensure that all necessary permit applications have been filed in order to bring the project to an on-time startup. MQes Uranium has environmental engineers, environmental professionals as well as licensing and regulatory specialists experienced in permitting uranium projects.
